An FSC-certified Paper Primer.

Answering 10 common questions.

  1. What does it mean when the FSC check tree label appears on a printed document?
The FSC check tree logo identifies forest products (paper or wood) that are environmentally and socially responsible. Only printers and suppliers that are FSC-certified can place the FSC label on a printed document or make any claim about a product being FSC-certified.

  2. How does FSC certification work?
Under FSC certification, forests are certified against a set of strict environmental and social standards, and fibre from certified forests is tracked all the way to the consumer through the chain of custody certification system. This means forests, pulp providers, mills, merchants and printers must all obtain FSC certification in order for a product to carry the FSC logo or label.

  3. How does specifying FSC-certified paper help the environment?
Because all FSC-certified paper is audited to meet strict standards, you have an assurance that forests are being managed responsibly, that waterways and wildlife habitat is protected, that fragile ecosystems are conserved and that the rights of local communities and First Nations Peoples are respected. Environmental groups around the world agree that when it comes to responsible forestry, FSC is the only credible assurance for you and your customers.

  4. What can I do to make a difference?
Next time you buy paper or spec for a print job, specify FSC-certified paper. You can change the world by specifying FSC-certified paper and your clients can change the world by using it. Graphic designers and communications professionals can play a vital role in saving forests and strengthening communities.

  5. Are FSC-certified papers more expensive?
FSC-certified paper costs the same as non-certified paper. Most paper producers have removed price premiums on FSC-certified paper, so there is no additional cost to being environmentally responsible.

  6. Will my work look good?
Specifying FSC-certified paper will make you look good. It will make your work look even better. You don't have to compromise quality for the environment – as FSC paper is of the same high quality as non-certified paper. FSC-certified papers are available in almost all formats, and offer an infinite variety of weights, textures, colours and finishes.

  7. Aren’t FSC-certified papers difficult to find?
All major Canadian paper merchants offer FSC-certified papers and over 180 brands of paper are available. Visit www.fsccanada.org/fscpaper.htm for the full list.

  8. How do I find an FSC-certified printer?
Many paper mills, most paper merchants and over 200 print shops across Canada are FSC-certified. For a full list of FSC-certified printers visit www.fsccanada.org/fscprinters.htm

  9. What about other forest and paper accreditations?
There are other third party certification systems in North America, however FSC is generally recognized as the most credible and rigorous. It is also the only forest certification system supported by leading environmental and social organizations such as WWF Canada, Greenpeace, Sierra Club of Canada, CPAWS, National Aboriginal Forestry Association and others.

  10. How can I find out more about FSC?
FSC Canada has a new education program and designation for graphic designers. Find out more at www.fsccanada.org/fscx
